How Do I Choose the Family That Will Adopt My Baby?

Undoubtedly, selecting the couple who adopts your child is the most critical step in the adoption process. You’re choosing to place your child for adoption because you want them to be in a home where they are secure and happy.  By choosing their adoptive family, you’re shaping their future.

Moore Options Pregnancy Center isn’t a licensed child-placing agency, but we can provide information and referrals to reputable agencies. Schedule a no-cost, confidential appointment with us to talk about this option.

How Do Couples Get Approved to Adopt?

Often, couples working with an adoption agency have an infertility diagnosis. They want to be parents but aren’t biologically able to have children

However, qualifying for adoption is not easy. An extensive approval process is required to be eligible. The following are just a few of the requirements:

  • The couple must have a home study, which ensures their home and other family members are safely prepared to receive a baby.
  • They must submit background checks, including fingerprinting and criminal and child abuse records.
  • They must submit financial and medical records.
  • Friends, clergy, and family members must submit referral letters.
  • They must prepare a video or written bio detailing their life, family, neighborhood, etc.
  • They write a letter to a potential expectant mother about why they wish to adopt.

Choosing Your Adoptive Couple

You know how you would like your child to grow up. Don’t settle for less than what you want. Many families are looking to adopt, and we’re sure you will find the right one for you and your child.

Think About The Environment You Want for Your Child

There may be certain things you definitely want for your child. Make a list of the most important ones. For instance:

  • Where do I want my child to live? In the city? On a farm?
  • Do I want my child to be the oldest or have other siblings immediately?
  • Do the adoptive parents need to own a home?
  • What about their lifestyle? Do they travel? Have hobbies?
  • What about their religion? Do they attend church?

Decide How Much Contact You Wish to Have With Them

There are three basic adoption plans: open, semi-open, and closed. As the expectant mother or birth mother, you determine the amount of communication you wish to have with the adoptive family and your child.

An open adoption (while not legally enforceable) means the adoptive couple and you share identifying information and contact one another directly. A semi-open plan provides more privacy because you contact one another through a third party, such as the adoption agency.

A closed adoption means you and the adoptive family do not want contact. Choose a couple who desires the same amount and type of communication as you.
